GERMAN PRISONERS OF WAR IN BAYFIELD with guest speaker Dennis McCann
Thursday, January 21, 2021
7:00 - 8:00 pm CST | Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85661118546
It’s a little known but fascinating chapter of Wisconsin - and Bayfield - history. In 1945, the war in Europe came home in a most unusual way when thousands of German prisoners were put to work in farm fields and orchards bursting with fruit, filling the labor gap created when millions of Americans went off to fight the long world war. In our next John Mathew Black program Dennis McCann tells how this came to be, and how Bayfield reacted to such unexpected, but welcome, help.
APOSTLE ISLANDS FOLKLORE & 'FAKE'-LORE with guest speaker Bob Mackreth
Thursday, February 18, 2021
7:00 - 8:00 pm CST | Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86139017184
"Is it true there was a ghost in that lighthouse? And what's the deal with those pirates I've heard about? Didn't someone bury a treasure on one of the islands? Was that the Hermit Island hermit, or was he just a legend? And what about that mansion that the rich guy built for his wife? And the lighthouse keeper who picked the pockets of the drowned sailors from some shipwreck?" There are all sorts of stories about Lake Superior's Apostle Islands. Historian Bob Mackreth examines some of the best-known tales to see which ones are based on fact, and which are myths that need to be busted.
UPCOMING 2021 PROGRAM TOPICS (Dates TBD):
