Families of The Apostle Islands: Sand Island – The Dahl Family

October 14, 2026

Step back into the living history of Sand Island as Bob Nelson sits down with Dahl family siblings Bob, Carl, and Sharon. Through their memories of life on the island, the conversation offers a personal window into a place shaped by close-knit families, farming, fishing, and the rhythms of Lake Superior.

Part of the Apostle Islands archipelago, Sand Island is also known for its sandstone sea caves and its historic lighthouse, built in 1881 from stone quarried on site.

This video is sponsored by the Apostle Islands Historic Preservation Conservancy, which promotes the preservation, enhancement, and appreciation of the historic and cultural resources of the Apostle Islands region.
