Months before the first “Omaha” train pulled into the station, William F. Dalrymple launched his plan to turn Bayfield into a major port city on Lake Superior. Despite personally making a significant financial investment in the project, obstacles put in his way prevented his plan from coming to fruition. After fifteen years of effort his Transfer Railway finally began running from Bayfield to Red Cliff, but ultimately only fifteen miles of road were built and by 1922 the last of these tracks were lifted.
