"RIDING THE WIND" at the BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA
As one of two organizations which co-commissioned the writing of the original musical "Riding the Wind" the Bayfield Heritage Association will again co-sponsor a Chautauqua performance of the musical history of Bayfield. The other sponsoring organizations for this performance are the Apostle Islands Historical Preservation Conservancy and the Belanger Settlement.

“COOKING WITH YVONNE ”
“A Taste of Italy” is this year’s theme. This will be a demonstration and 4-course menu tasting. All locally available products and ingredients will be used and attendees will receive copies of the recipes used. The course Fee is $60, of which $50 is a tax-deductible contribution to the Bayfield Heritage Association. Bayfield native Yvonne LaPointe Moody has taught cooking in the Minneapolis – St. Paul area for over 30 years. Her cooking credentials include study at LaVarenne and Cordon Bleu in Paris, study with Simone Beck in the south of France, and also study with Jacques Pepin and other notable chefs in the U.S. She is a certified teacher with the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

Bayfield Heritage Center 2008 Feature Exhibits
“JOHN BLACK/BESSIE NOURSE RETROSPECTIVE"
This art exhibit opened at the Heritage Center Museum on June 29 and the paintings will be on display during our regular hours until the center closes on September 27, 2008.

Two of the paintings exhibited are shown below and 67 more have been loaned to the the Heritage Center Museum from private collections across the United States. This is the most extensive exhibit of the works of these artists ever brought together for public viewing.

The opening of the Black/Nourse Art Retrospective was attended by over 100 guests including descendants of both John Black and Bessie Nourse. Mr. Steve Soderman, the curator of Mary Rice’s art collection, directed the placement of 69 paintings loaned to the Bayfield Heritage Center for this exhibit from donors across the country. Mr. Soderman explained artistic variations between many of the paintings which are now available for viewing by the public.

The “RAY CAHILL BARBER SHOP”
This semi-permanent exhibit, created from the original cabinetry, furnishings and even the bottles, signage and clock, has been "under construction" since last fall and now recreates this nostalgic gathering place of area residents for nearly 50 years. The next regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bayfield Heritage Association will be held at 5:00 P.M. on Monday August 4, 2008 at the Heritage Center. The membership of the Bayfield Heritage Association and the public are welcome. Volunteer Appeal -We need YOUR Talents -The Bayfield Heritage Center needs volunteers who can devote an hour or two, or more, a week to assist with activities from baking cookies and making coffee for events to setting up the Heritage Center for programs. We need individuals to greet visitors during our summer season and individuals who would like to work with the collections and archives or help with new and ever changing exhibit construction. The Fountain Garden Park and Apple Shed properties need summer maintenance as does the Heritage Center building. Business office volunteers are needed to assist with mailings, the Courier newsletter publication and if you have computer skills many projects under development could use your help. Our appeal is for individuals who have an interest in preserving the heritage of the greater Bayfield area while having fun working with like minded people to promote our area through publications, events and programs which highlight the history of our beautiful part of the world.
